How to Pick a Mobile Mechanic in Monroe NC
A guest post from MechanicRank. Six checks to run before a mobile mechanic works on your car in Monroe or anywhere in Union County.
Guest post by Anthony Limpert, co-founder of MechanicRank and an ASE Master Automobile Technician.
Monroe sits on US 74 east of Charlotte, and a lot of Union County drives it every day. A car that will not start in a work lot, or brakes that grind in your driveway, will not wait for a shop to open. A mobile mechanic can fix a lot of that where the car is parked. It also means a stranger is working on your car at your home, so a few checks are worth the time.
Know What Fits in a Driveway
Brakes, batteries, starters, alternators, belts, oil changes and diagnostics are normal driveway jobs. Anything that needs a lift or a press, like a transmission swap, belongs in a shop. A straight answer about which one you have is a good sign. Be wary of anyone who says yes to everything.
Ask About Insurance and Credentials
Ask if the mechanic carries liability insurance, and ask what happens if your car or your driveway gets damaged. A mechanic who works on your car should have an answer ready, and the answer should be a plain yes or a plain no. Ask about training too, such as ASE certification. Requirements for repair businesses are not the same everywhere, so ask each question and do not assume. A real business will answer plainly.
Get the Estimate in Writing First
Ask for the quote by text or email before any work starts. It should split parts from labor. Also ask what happens if the mechanic finds a second problem. The right answer is that he calls you and waits for your yes before doing anything extra.
Read the Reviews, Then Count Them
Five stars from a handful of people tells you little. Look for a long history of reviews, and for reviews that name the job, such as brakes, a no start or a battery. That tells you the shop does the kind of work your car needs. Also look at how the owner handles the rare bad one. A calm, specific reply says more about a business than a perfect score does.
Last, trust the phone call. A good mobile mechanic asks what the car is doing, when it started and where it is parked before he quotes anything. If you get a number with no questions, keep looking.
Ask About Parts and Warranty
Ask where the parts come from and whether the repair carries a warranty. If it does, ask whether it covers parts, labor or both, and how long it lasts. Get that in writing as well. A mechanic who stands behind the work will not mind.
