What It Is
Most automatic transmissions have a pan bolted to the bottom with a filter inside it. Dropping the pan drains part of the old fluid, gives a look at what has settled in the bottom, and lets the filter be changed. Fresh fluid of the right type goes back in.
It is the transmission work he does. In his own words, he services a transmission and he does not swap or rebuild one.
Signs You Need It
- Fluid that is dark or smells burnt, on cars that still have a dipstick
- Shifts that feel late or harsh
- The service interval in the owner's manual has passed
- A used car with no record of the fluid ever being changed
How It Goes at Your Address
The car is raised level on a jack and stands. The pan bolts come out, the fluid drains, and the old filter and gasket come off. New ones go on, the pan goes back up, and the fluid is refilled and checked to the level the car calls for.
Some transmissions have no dipstick and a fill check that needs the fluid at a set temperature. Give him the year, make and model so he knows what he is walking into.
Where His Line Is
He does not remove, replace or rebuild a transmission, in his own words. That is shop work with a lift and a bench. If a transmission is already slipping badly, fresh fluid is unlikely to cure it, and that is worth hearing before you pay for a service.

Questions
Before You Call
Will he replace or rebuild my transmission?
No. His own words are that he does not swap or rebuild one. He drops the pan and changes the filter and the fluid. A swap or a rebuild is shop work.
Is a pan drop the same as a flush?
No. A pan drop changes the filter and part of the fluid. A flush machine pushes more fluid through the whole system. The pan drop is the one on his list.
Can a fluid service fix a slipping transmission?
Sometimes, if the fluid is low or badly worn. Often not, if the slipping comes from wear inside. That is worth knowing before you pay for it.
