What It Is
Coolant carries heat away from the engine to the radiator, where air cools it again. It also protects the inside of the engine from rust and from freezing. Over time it breaks down and stops protecting, and old coolant leaves deposits that block the narrow passages in the radiator.
A flush drains the old coolant, rinses the system, and refills it with the type your car calls for. Then the air is bled out, so the engine does not run hot on an air pocket.
Signs You Need It
- The temperature needle sits higher than it used to
- A sweet smell after driving, which is often coolant
- Coolant that looks brown, rusty or sludgy in the overflow tank
- Low coolant that keeps needing a top up
- The heater blows lukewarm air in winter
How It Goes at Your Address
The engine has to be cool before anything is opened, because a hot cooling system is under pressure. Then the old coolant is drained, the system is rinsed and refilled, and the engine runs with the heater on until the air is out.
A flush is also the time to look at the hoses. One of his reviewers had been told by several shops she needed a new radiator, and he found a leaking hose instead. Another had the coolant changed on the same visit as a brake job.
Where His Line Is
Coolant mixed into the oil, or white smoke from the exhaust, can mean a head gasket. That is engine work, and engine rebuilds are not something he takes on.

What His Reviews Say

Great guy! It's awesome to have an honest auto mechanic who is also mobile. He did some troubleshooting and ruled out the more expensive ideas, and it turned out to be a simple fix. Offered other advice on how to save money on upcoming repairs as well. Would highly recommend in Waxhaw or other surrounding areas if you need a good auto mechanic who can also come to you.
Addition: Brian came back today and replaced the brakes and changed the coolant. He is on time, friendly, honest, and will def use again!
When I contacted Brian I had been advised I needed a new radiator by several repair shops. Within minutes of working on my car, he located a leaky hose which turned out to be the real problem. Brian was so nice and knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything to me. The price was a huge savings to me and I cant Thank him enough! Very highly recommend! He even fixed my garage opener before he left...Best experience ever!

Questions
Before You Call
How often does coolant need changing?
Check your owner's manual. Some coolants last years and older types much less. Coolant that has gone brown or rusty is overdue whatever the book says.
Is a flush the same as a top up?
No. A top up adds coolant to what is already there. A flush replaces it. If you are topping up often, there is a leak to find.
My car is overheating. Should I keep driving?
No. Pull over and turn the engine off. Driving it hot is how a cheap hose becomes a head gasket. Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
