What It Is
Each cylinder has a spark plug that lights the fuel, and on most newer engines each plug has its own ignition coil sitting on top of it. A worn plug or a failing coil means that cylinder stops firing properly. That is a misfire.
Plugs are a service item with an interval in the owner's manual. Coils fail on their own schedule. When one coil goes, the code usually names the cylinder, which makes it one of the more direct faults to find.

Signs You Need It
- A rough idle or a shake at a stop light
- A flashing check engine light, which means stop driving and get it looked at
- Hesitation or stumbling when you accelerate
- Worse fuel mileage than usual
- Plugs past the interval in the owner's manual
How It Goes at Your Address
The coils come off the top of the engine, the old plugs come out, the gap on the new plugs is checked, and they go in at the right torque. A failed coil gets replaced. Then the engine is started and checked again.
One of the few job photographs he has is plugs and coils on a Volvo V8, done on a leaf covered driveway. A reviewer who had plugs and coil packs changed says he showed up when he said he would.
Where His Line Is
Some engines hide the rear plugs under the intake, and on a few the job is far bigger than it sounds. Give him the year, make and engine when you call, so you both know if it is a driveway job.

Questions
Before You Call
Is a flashing check engine light serious?
Yes. A flashing light usually means a misfire bad enough to damage the catalytic converter. Drive as little as you can and get it looked at.
Do I replace one coil or all of them?
Usually just the one that failed, unless the rest are old and doing them together makes sense to you. He quotes it before he starts, so you decide.
Can a misfire be something other than plugs and coils?
Yes. A vacuum leak, a fuel injector or low compression can all cause one. That is why the code gets read and the cause found before parts go in.
