A Belt Job at the Curb

The serpentine belt is the long ribbed belt on the front of the engine. It turns the alternator and the other parts bolted to the front of the motor. When it slips or breaks, the charging stops.

The car was parked at the curb, and that is where the work was done. The owner bought the belt, so the job was labor only.

The Dead Battery

The record also says the battery was dead. That fits with a belt problem, since the belt turns the alternator that charges the battery. The record does not say more than that, so this post does not either.

The New Belt on the Pulleys

A belt has to follow the right path around every pulley. Most cars have a sticker under the hood that shows the route. A belt on the wrong path squeals, slips or comes off.

If the battery keeps going flat after a belt job, the next step is a battery and charging test.

Questions

What does a serpentine belt do?

It is one long belt that turns the alternator, the power steering pump, the water pump on many cars and the air conditioning. When it breaks, those stop.

Can he put on a belt I bought?

On this job he did. The owner had the part and Brian did the labor. Ask when you call.

Can a bad belt kill the battery?

It can. The belt turns the alternator, and the alternator charges the battery. A loose or broken belt means no charging. On this car the battery was dead.
